Smoky quartz is my go-to crystal when I need soothing from stress. It helps me calm down and ground myself. Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz that ranges from a pale tan color to deep chocolate brown. The color of smoky quartz is caused by natural irradiation and traces of aluminum built into its crystal lattice. It is the crystal for soothing frayed nerves and de-stressing. Smoky quartz contains the element Lithium. Lithium salts are used to treat depression and bipolar disorder.
Sometimes, dealers will artificially treat clear quartz crystal with gamma radiation to create smoky quartz that looks nearly black. It’s very difficult to impossible to tell treated smoky quartz from a naturally dark variety called Morion quartz. If purchasing naturally occurring crystals versus treated crystals is important to you, ask questions about the origin of the crystal. The dealer may or may not know, but it’s always fair and appropriate to ask.
Smoky quartz is considered to be a protective stone against bad luck in the Alpine countries of Europe. To this day, polished crucifixes are made of it.
Metaphysically, smoky quartz is considered protective and an excellent aid in transmuting negative energy by grounding it into the earth. It’s a wonderful stone to use when you feel stuck in your head or are overanalyzing to slow down and feel more present and embodied. It’s an excellent stone to have in times of grief. If you experience anxiety smoky quartz can be a good crystal ally to wear as jewelry or carry as a pocket stone.
In addition to aiding one to relax, smoky quartz can help one to focus and enhances practicality and organization. It is said to neutralize the fear of failure. Therefore, it could make a great gift for students or anyone trying something new.
